After brainstorming and throwing all sorts of ideas for our company name, we remembered our wedding announcements which included a photos of a husband and wife dancing in their living room with lampshades on their head. And thus, a name was found: Lampshade Coffee. Then we learned that some folks wake up with lampshade on their head after a extended night partying. Serendipity! They need coffee too.

Our story

Lampshade Coffee started in 2013 as part of our journey in understanding where our food originates, how it is processed, and finding joy in every taste.

After researching the art and science involved in coffee roasting, we started our roasting adventure. Many batches were roasted wherein we recognized that coffee roasting is not just an application of differential equations or chemical reactions, but it is a blending of science, art, and passion.

We are forever thankful for those test subjects who tasted those early batches. Looking back, those were some “special” food experiences. After lots of experimenting and starting to become one with the bean, one of our tasting volunteers asked if we sold our coffee. In a microsecond, we responded: “We do now!”

Here we are, years later, enjoying the aroma of fresh roasted coffee and sharing our passion with you.

Thank you for sharing this adventure. We look forward to growing with you.

Our beans and packaging

We source our beans from a specialty coffee importer that we’ve used for years. Many of their coffees come from their efforts to find small farms and cooperatives where they are able to verify that the prices they pay make it to the workers who produce the coffee. And, our importer pays these hard workers a premium in recognition of the exceptional products they produce.

We’ve evolved our packaging over the years. After lots of research, we were able to find a biodegradable package that is sealed and includes a one-way degassing valve. While this may increase our costs, it is important to us that we make every effort in supporting a sustainable supply chain.
